Parenting a Responsible Child

Parenting a Responsible Child

Have you ever considered how “entitlement” controls our lives, especially as children?  “We enter the adult world expecting far too much from others and far too little from ourselves,” says authors Foster Cline, MD and Jim Fay.  Allowing the attitude and habit of entitlement as a child, inhibits children to be responsible in adulthood, knowing how to attain or maintain their lifestyle other than demanding it from their parents.*

  • Childhood entitlement effects many aspects of the adult life:
  • Managing finances
  • Succeeding or holding down jobs
  • Irresponsible use of time
  • High expectations of others
  • Little appreciation for quality education
  • Inability to the sacrifice of others
  • Low respect for leadership
  • Willingness to defy laws, rules and values
  • Resentment to those who require or request achievement

And, that is just a little list! Do you see why organizing your child’s experiences and habits is so important? Here are three tips to help you parent a high-functioning child:

  1. Children learn how to get what they want through their own effort. Finding success builds positive self-esteem.*
  2. Develop skills for setting and following boundries.*
  3. Allow children to surround themselves with like-thinking friends. Not listening to mistaken beliefs from already entitled-minded children will allow them freedom to think for themselves.*
